IS E-APPROVED ALWAYS LEGAL?

Motorcycle headlight with E-mark

WHAT IS THE E-MARK ON PARTS AND ACCESSORIES?

The E-mark (or e-mark) on motorcycle parts is a certification mark indicating that the part complies with European regulations regarding safety, quality, and environmental aspects. This means the part has been tested and approved according to EU or United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) standards, making it suitable for road use in the EU, including Hungary.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE E-MARK:

How do you recognize it?

The marking usually appears as an E followed by a number in a circle or rectangle – for example, E4 or e4. The number indicates the country that issued the approval: E1 = Germany, E2 = France, E4 = Netherlands, E5 = Sweden, Hungary = E7, etc.

What does it mean?

The part complies with minimum technical and safety standards. It can be used throughout the EU and EEA countries without additional national approval. This includes lights, exhausts, mirrors, tires, seatbelts, and other safety-critical components.

E-mark vs e-mark

E-mark: Approval according to UNECE regulations, based on international agreements (including EU legislation).

e-mark: Approval according to EU directive (older system, increasingly replaced by UNECE).

Both are accepted, but for motorcycles and their parts, the UNECE E-mark is more common.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Legal use:

Unapproved parts (e.g., "for racing only" or unmarked products) can lead to failure at technical inspection or fines.

Insurance and liability:

If an accident occurs, unapproved parts can affect insurance compensation.

Technical inspection:

In Hungary, E-marked parts confirm compliance during the periodic technical inspection (MOT test).

IS THIS LEGAL IN HUNGARY?

Yes: In Hungary – as in all EU member states – E-marked parts can be legally used on motorcycles, provided that:

The approval applies to your vehicle type!

Not all E-marked parts can be used on all motorcycles. The approval must match the motorcycle's type (e.g., model, year, engine size).

No separate approval is required!

Some parts (e.g., mirrors, indicators, brake lights) fitted with an E-mark can be installed without further inspection, if they do not affect the vehicle's technical or structural integrity.

The modification does not jeopardize roadworthiness!

Even E-marked parts must not exceed noise, emission, or safety limits. For example, an E-marked exhaust that is louder than allowed can result in a fine or technical failure.

Properly installed

Poorly installed, even if approved, parts can also be deemed unsafe or non-compliant.

EXAMPLES

Generally can be installed without approval with an E-mark:

  • Turn signals and lighting fixtures
  • Rearview mirrors
  • Brake system hoses
  • Windscreens

Even with an E-mark, further approval may be required for:

  • Exhaust systems (due to noise/emissions)
  • Chassis parts
  • Brake upgrades
  • Handlebar or frame modifications

CONCLUSION

The bottom line: Yes, E-marked parts and accessories are legal and can be legally used, but pay attention to ensure they are:

  • Approved for your motorcycle
  • Properly installed
  • Do not compromise safety or the environment
  • Do not require separate approval (if unsure, consult the authorities)
